Stichting Civitas Naturalis werd opgericht op 10 juli 2020 door Professor Dr. Ir. Roelof A.A. Oldeman en Ir. Jack P. Kruf Huyssons met als doel ‘bevordering van een holistische en silvologische* benadering van ontwerp, inrichting, management en besturing van publieke waarden en hun organisaties door middel van de bevordering en deling van kennis in de meest brede zin.’ Systeemdenken staat daarbij centraal met in haar portfolio: een tweejaarlijkse Oldemanlezing en het raamwerk voor diagnose CINTONE, een acroniem van CIvitas Naturalis TONE. Het betekent: ‘Toon van Ecosysteem Stad*’.
Stichting Civitas Naturalis was founded on 10 July 2020 by Professor Dr. Ir. Roelof A.A. Oldeman and Ir. Jack P. Kruf Huyssons. The organisation’s mission is to promote a holistic and silvological approach to the design, establishment, management, and governance of public values and their organisations, and to share knowledge on these topics. Systems thinking lies at the heart of its activities. This includes a biennial Oldeman Lecture and the CINTONE diagnostic framework, an acronym of CIvitas Naturalis TONE. It means: ‘Tone of Ecosystem City*’.
De inspiratie voor dit initiatief is gelegen in de werking van het meest complexe natuurlijke ecosysteem op aarde, die van het bos. De overtuiging is er dat het bos ons veel kan leren over de besturing van het systeem van stad en samenleving. In het bijzonder bleek uit bevindingen in de praktijk van ‘city management’ dat de hier aanwezige componenten (organisaties zijn de organismen), structuren en processen ook hier binnen één ecosysteem kunnen worden beschouwd, waarbij rollen en relaties bepalend zijn voor balans, diversiteit en veerkracht.
This initiative is inspired by the workings of one of the most complex natural ecosystems on Earth: the forest. It is believed that forests could teach us a great deal about managing urban and societal systems. Findings from the practice of ‘city management’ in particular showed that the components, structures, and processes present here can also be considered within one ecosystem, where roles and relationships determine balance, diversity, and resilience.

CINTONE is primair ontwikkeld voor diagnose van levensgemeenschappen. Het is geïnspireerd door bestaande diagnoses van natuurlijke (bos)ecosystemen. Het vertrekpunt van diagnose is in dit concept vaak een concreet voorliggend vraagstuk, thema of kwestie, dat aanpak of oplossing behoeft. Hierbij staat te behouden, te herstellen of te scheppen publieke waarden centraal. De eerste vraag voor elke vorm van navigatie is: ‘Waar bevinden wij ons’. Dit raamwerk biedt mogelijk nieuwe vormen van handvatten, zulks gebasserd op ecosystemische principes. De stad – als pars pro toto en als metafoor voor het geheel van het publieke domein van de samenleving – wordt daarbij beschouwd als één ecosysteem. Het raamwerk bestaat uit een set van uitgangspunten, principes, meetmethoden en weergave-instrumenten.
CINTONE was primarily developed for diagnosing living communities. It is inspired by existing methods of diagnosing natural (forest) ecosystems. In this approach, the starting point of the diagnosis is typically a specific issue or problem that requires attention. Here, the public values that are to be preserved, restored, or created are central. The first question in any navigation process is, ‘Where are we?’ This framework may offer new forms of guidance based on ecosystem principles. The city, seen as a metaphor for society’s entire public domain, is considered one ecosystem. The framework consists of a set of starting points, principles, measurement methods, and display tools.
Met het overlijden van Professor Oldeman in het najaar van 2022 en de overdracht die volgde van zijn wetenschappelijk werk, tekeningen en privébibliotheek aan het Natuurmuseum Brabant, werd Stichting Civitas Naturalis op 10 april 2024 ontbonden. De Oldemanlezing werd formeel overgedragen aan de door het museum benoemde Professor Oldeman Collectie. Kruf Huyssons heeft hun gezamenlijke werk met betrekking tot dit raamwerk voortgezet en verder uitgebouwd. De methodiek van diagnose van het raamwerk werd verdiept en nieuwe, flankerende onderdelen werden toegevoegd.
Following the passing of Professor Oldeman in autumn 2022, his scientific work, drawings, and private library were transferred to the Nature Museum Brabant. The foundation was subsequently dissolved on 10 April 2024. The Oldeman Lecture was formally transferred to the Oldeman Collection, appointed by the museum. Kruf Huyssons continued and expanded their joint efforts on this framework. He deepened the methodology of diagnosis within the framework and added new flanking services,
